Uncut Currency Sheets &c.

Since 1981, the BEP has sold full and partial uncut sheets of currency directly to collectors. (Current-series uncut sheets can be purchased at the U.S. Mint's online store.) Initially only $1 sheets were available, but $2 sheets were soon offered as well, and higher denominations have been gradually added; today sheets are sold in all denominations from $1 to $100.

50-subject uncut sheets

The newest sheet format, first sold in 2016, is the 50-subject sheet, printed on the BEP's latest-generation presses. So far, only the $1 has been printed this way, but other denominations are expected to follow.

Unlike other recent uncut sheets, the 50-subject uncut sheets do not use distinctive ranges of serial numbers; they are taken from ordinary serial ranges printed for circulation. The BEP does not report the quantity of uncut sheets sold or the exact serial number range used, so the sheet serial ranges must be estimated based on observed sheets and observed notes in circulation.

32-subject uncut sheets

Uncut sheets of 32 subjects were first sold in 1981, and are still sold today in all denominations except the $1. In most cases, the uncut sheets have had special ranges of serial numbers, higher than the serials used on notes printed for circulation. However, uncut sheets of star notes frequently represent leftovers from regular production print runs, rather than special printings for collectors, and so the star sheets do not use these special high serials.

The table below lists the serial number blocks which have been used for these sheets. In each non-star block, all serial numbers used on uncut sheets are above 99840000 in Series 1981 and 1981A; above 99776000 in Series 1985; above 99200000 in Series 1988; and above 96000000 in all other series listed. (Exception: some Series 1995 $5 sheets and some Series 2009 $2 sheets were printed with serials in the 8888xxxx range.) However, many of the blocks listed here used only part of the available serial range. I am currently attempting to compile more specific information on the serial ranges used for the uncut sheets. See the survey page here for details, and please report any uncut sheets you may have that do not fall into the ranges already listed there! :)

Colors indicate sheets printed at Washington, DC or Fort Worth, TX. Once again, the BEP does not provide regular reports on the sheets as it does on the circulation production, so the information on current series may be somewhat incomplete.

Certain of these blocks were not released as full sheets, but only as partial sheets. These are:

The following blocks were printed only as uncut sheets, and not as circulation-issue notes:

The following blocks had uncut sheets printed at Fort Worth, though all circulation-issue notes in these blocks were printed at Washington:

Conversely, the following blocks had uncut sheets printed at Washington, though all circulation-issue notes in these blocks were printed at Fort Worth:

Many (likely all) of the Series 1981 $1 A..H sheets contain a mismatched prefix error: On the note in position G3, in the right-hand serial number, the prefix letter 'A' is replaced by a 'B'. The notes from this position have serials A 999 50001 H through A 999 55000 H.

Other BEP collector products

For many years, the uncut sheets were the only collector products sold by the BEP. Starting in the 1990's, however, quite a few additional products have been introduced. Most of these offerings are single notes or small sets of notes with either star serial numbers or other mildly interesting serials such as 0000xxxx or 8888xxxx. These notes are usually drawn from the BEP's ordinary print runs, so that they do not create any new serial number ranges outside those used for circulation production.

However, a few of the collector products have actually included notes printed especially for the purpose. These notes, like those in the uncut sheets, have serials outside the ranges reported as printed for circulation. The following table lists the serial numbers known to have been used for such notes.

The 2003 $2 range I 000 00001 * to I 000 16000 * consists of serials that were reported as printed for circulation, but the notes with these serials included in the BEP premium sets were not the notes from the circulation print run, being from different plate positions. Presumably this means that the first 16000 notes of the circulation print run were destroyed unissued.

Also, those 2003 $2 premium notes were listed by the BEP as having been printed at Washington, but observed notes have the "FW" mark. The BEP has explained that the notes were intaglio-printed at Fort Worth, but that these 8000 sheets were then shipped to Washington for overprinting! Bizarre, but oh well. For present purposes, I'm still going to list them as Fort Worth products....

Older uncut sheets

Prior to the BEP's offering of uncut sheets in 1981, the sheets had been unavailable to collectors since the early 1950's. These older sheets were not advertised by the BEP, but were available upon request; as a result, they were released in much smaller quantities than the modern sheets. They also did not have special serial numbers as the 32-subject sheets do; like the modern 50-subject sheets, they were simply printed in sequence with the ongoing regular production. The following tables list the serial number ranges recorded as having been used for these older-series uncut sheets.

The 12-subject sheets are all numbered consecutively, except for the 1935A $1 SC F..C block sheets. Those sheets, representing the wartime North Africa and Hawaii issues, are numbered consecutively down each half of the sheet, with a skip of 1998 serials between halves--so, for example, the sheet containing F 419 52001 C through F 419 52006 C on the left half would also contain F 419 53999 C through F 419 54004 C on the right half. (It appears that most normal production print runs were numbered in this fashion for much of the 12-subject-sheet era, but that most runs of uncut sheets were given special numbering so that all twelve notes on each sheet would be consecutive.)

The 18-subject sheets, on the other hand, are all skip-numbered, with skips of 8000 serials between positions. Thus, for example, the sheet containing A 000 00001 A would also contain A 000 08001 A, A 000 16001 A, and so on up to A 001 36001 A.

In addition to the sheets listed above, a very few uncut sheets of 1928-series FRNs and Series 1929 FRBNs are known to exist, though the BEP has no record of their issue. Most, but not all, of these have very low serial numbers, representing the first few sheets of the printing for their Federal Reserve district. Also, many six-note half-sheets of Series 1929 NBNs exist; these notes were actually issued to the National Banks in half-sheet form, and it was not an uncommon practice for a bank to preserve a sheet or two for display purposes, or to sell one to an interested collector.
