The table below shows the serial number ranges produced for the regular and star notes in this series. (The use of star replacement notes did not begin until 1910, while the Vernon-McClung signatures were in use.) Data listed in italics is approximate, based on the serial numbers of observed notes.
Beginning with the introduction of the Elliott-Burke signatures, the BEP began to use old and current face plates interchangeably, so that notes with different signatures are found mixed together for a time until all old face plates have worn out. Before Elliott-Burke, signature transitions are generally sharp, though small groups of late-serialled notes occasionally occur.
