$1 Federal Reserve Notes

The numbers in the table are the first and last serials printed for regular notes on the given FRB in the given series. Except as noted, no gaps occur in the numbering. For information on star note serial number ranges, see the page for each individual series.

Maximum serial numbers have varied over time: Until late in Series 1974, each block ran from 00000001 to 99999999. From late in Series 1974 until the middle of Series 1981, each block stopped at 99840000. From the middle of Series 1981 until the middle of Series 1988, each block stopped at 99200000. And from the middle of Series 1988 onward, each block stops at 96000000. Also, serial numbers ending with letters O and Z are not used. These facts should be kept in mind when interpreting ranges in the table which span more than one block letter.

The following full blocks of Series 1974 had serial numbers only up to 99840000, rather than 99999999: B..G, C..C, E..F, F..E, F..F, J..B, K..C, L..G.

The following full blocks of Series 1981 had serial numbers only up to 99200000, rather than 99840000: A..C, B..G, B..H, B..I, C..C, E..D, E..E, E..F, F..E, F..F, F..G, G..E, G..F, J..C, L..E, L..F.

The following full blocks of Series 1988 had serial numbers only up to 96000000, rather than 99200000: A..B, B..G, B..H, B..I, C..A, D..B, E..E, E..F, E..G, L..D, L..E, L..F.

Obsolete type $1 notes

Series 1963 was the first issue of $1 Federal Reserve Notes. Previously, the $1 denomination had been issued only as Silver Certificates and United States Notes. On these note types, the first letter of the serial number had no particular significance, as they were not issued directly by the Federal Reserve Banks. So once the A..A block was completed, the next notes were printed in the B..A block, and so on. The letter O was skipped, but Z was used. After the Z..A block was completed, numbering continued in the A..B block, and so on. Each full block had serial numbers from 00000001 to 99999999, with the hundred-millionth note replaced by a star note. (Up until the middle of Series 1934, the last note of each block was often actually printed with the nine-digit number 100000000; this number had to be stamped on the note by hand, because the automatic numbering machines could print only eight digits.) Star notes had the star at the beginning of the serial number rather than the end.

Prior to Series 1935E, when notes of different series were in production simultaneously, they would often be mixed together before the serial numbers were overprinted. Therefore, it is not always possible to separate the serial numbers used on one series from those used on the next.

The three groups of Silver Certificates in the 1928 series with serial numbers far beyond those of the rest of the run are experimental printings. See the explanation below.

The first serial number printed for Series 1928A was D 151 36001 A; for Series 1928B, V 510 00001 A; for Series 1928C, B 294 48001 B; for Series 1928D, D 825 96001 B; and for Series 1928E, F 720 00001 B. In each case, notes of older series continued to be produced until all old printing plates had worn out, and whenever notes of different series were in production simultaneously, they were mixed at random before serial numbering. Plates for Series 1928A through 1928E all remained in use until the introduction of Series 1934 ended production of all 1928 series.

From Series 1935A onward, the series designation and signatures were part of the overprinting logotype, not the printing plate; but again, older logotypes continued to be used alongside current ones until they wore out. The first serial number printed for Series 1935A was M 076 68001 A, and the last for Series 1935 was R 815 52000 A. Similarly, Series 1935B and 1935A were both in production between serials C 933 84001 D and D 456 24000 D; and Series 1935C and 1935B were both in production between serials K 999 96001 D and M 006 48000 D. The first serial number printed for Series 1935D was R 881 04001 E, but the last serial for Series 1935C does not seem to have been recorded. With the introduction of Series 1935E, the use of old logotypes was ended, and series transitions became sharp, with no mixing of serial numbers between successive series. (In the star notes, the first serial printed for Series 1935A was * 170 76001 A, but none of the other high and low serials seem to have been recorded.)

Numbering in Series 1935D skipped serials M 981 28001 G through M 999 99999 G and * 070 44001 C through * 999 99999 C. This is due to the BEP's transition from 12-subject to 18-subject printing plates: Production from the new 18-subject plates began in the N..G and *..D blocks while the old 12-subject plates were still being used for the M..G and *..C blocks, and the last of the old plates wore out before the M..G and *..C blocks were completed. (The 18-subject plates had earlier been used to print the entire G..G block. So blocks G..G and N..G were printed simultaneously with, and separately from, blocks H..G through M..G.)

For the same reason, from the *..D block onward there are many small gaps of 64,000 or 280,000 missing numbers in the serial numbering of the 1935-series star notes, just as occur in the FRN stars printed in 18-subject sheets. The tables above do not attempt to show all these gaps; I do not have complete information on where they fall in the serial ranges.

The 360,000 Series 1935F Silver Certificates with serial numbers B 716 40001 J to B 720 00000 J, in the middle of the Series 1935G range, were involved in a test of new automated inspection equipment at the BEP. It is unclear exactly why this test affected the series designation of these notes.

The motto "In God We Trust" was added to the backs of the $1 Silver Certificates in the middle of Series 1935G, beginning at serial numbers D 489 60001 J and * 190 80001 G.

There are many small gaps of 160,000 missing numbers in the serial numbering of the 1957-series star notes, just as occur in the early series of FRNs printed in 32-subject sheets. However, I do not have complete information on where these gaps fall (other than the one between the serial ranges for Series 1957A and 1957B).

Special issue $1 notes

Wartime emergency issues: During World War II, some Series 1935A Silver Certificates were printed with yellow, rather than blue, seals. These notes were used to pay U.S. troops in North Africa and the Middle East, the idea being that the specially printed notes could easily be identified and demonetised if a large quantity fell into enemy hands. For similar reasons, other Series 1935A Silver Certificates were printed with brown seals and serial numbers; these notes were issued for general circulation in Hawaii, which it was feared might be captured by Japan.

The following tables give the serial number ranges for these special printings of $1 notes.

Experimental printings: The $1 denomination has frequently been chosen for tests of alternative paper compositions and printing techniques. Often, special runs of serial numbers were set aside for the experimental notes, so that they could be easily identified later to observe how well they held up in circulation.

The first group of experimental notes were printed in Series 1928A and 1928B. There were three batches of notes printed, two on different test papers and one on regular paper as a control group. The notes on special paper were numbered X 000 00001 B through X 107 28000 B and Y 000 00001 B through Y 102 48000 B; the control group on regular paper was numbered Z 000 00001 B through Z 102 48000 B. Note that these serial numbers are well above the ranges used on any other notes from the 1928 series.

Another group of experimentals was printed in Series 1935. Again the test involved three batches of notes: one on paper with a special finish, numbered A 000 00001 B through A 061 80000 B; one on special paper, numbered B 000 00001 B through B 033 00000 B; and a control group on regular paper numbered C 000 00001 B through C 033 00000 B. These serial number ranges are above any others used on Series 1935, but they do fall within the ranges used for Series 1935A. I've not been able to determine whether the same serial numbers were used again in Series 1935A when the regular print runs reached these blocks.

Series 1935A "S" experimental note

A third issue of experimental notes, in Series 1935A, was conducted somewhat differently. This time, the serial numbers used were in sequence with the ordinary production; the experimental notes were identified by large red letters "R" and "S", for regular and special paper respectively, overprinted on the face of the notes to the right of the seal. The "R" notes were numbered S 708 84001 C through S 720 68000 C and * 911 76001 A through * 911 88000 A, and the "S" notes were numbered S 738 84001 C through S 750 68000 C and * 911 88001 A through * 912 00000 A.

Later experimental runs were not always so easily detected. One print run of Series 1963 $1 FRNs was produced on experimental paper, but it was not identified by either special serial numbers or distinctive markings. In this case, the BEP's purpose was not to test a different paper composition, but to test the ability of a new supplier, the Gilbert Paper Company, to duplicate the usual currency paper. The notes involved in this test were numbered C 608 00001 A through C 614 40000 A. No additional paper was ordered from the Gilbert Co., but the option was left available in case the BEP's usual supply of paper was ever interrupted.

A similar experiment took place in 1981, when the BEP produced a few print runs of notes on Natick security paper. The notes involved were Series 1977A $1's with serial numbers E 768 00001 H through E 806 40000 H and E 070 52001 * through E 076 80000 *. (Note that many references incorrectly list this star range as Philadelphia instead of Richmond.) One run of $10 star notes was also included in this paper test, making it the only experimental printing so far not restricted to the $1 denomination.

A more recent example of an experiment involving $1 notes was the trial use of a web-fed printing press in the mid-1990s. Unlike the earlier experiments, in this case it was the printing technique and not the paper that was changed. Also, the number of experimental notes released for circulation was much larger than in the previous instances, as tests continued over a period of several years. For some background on the web press, and a table of the serial number ranges of the notes printed on it, see the page on web notes.
